Articles a and an:
The articles “a” and “an” are used to indicate a single, non-specific item. The choice between “a” and “an” depends on the sound that follows the article.
”A” is used before words that start with a consonant sound:
1. A cat
2. A dog
3. A book
4. A house
5. A car
6. A tree
7. A phone
8. A chair
9. A computer
10. A teacher
”An” is used before words that start with a vowel sound:
1. An apple
2. An orange
3. An egg
4. An umbrella
5. An hour (note the silent “h”, so it sounds like it starts with a vowel)
6. An elephant
