   - Examples:

     - “staff” (from “staf”)

     - “fill” (from “fil”)

     - “pass” (from “pas”)

2. Why It’s Called the “Floss” Rule:

   - The rule gets its name from the word “floss” itself, which follows this pattern.

 Application of the Rule

- When to Apply:

  - Only apply the rule to one-syllable words.

  - Ensure the word ends in a single vowel followed by a final f, l, or s.

  - Example:

    - “huff” (one syllable, ends in a single vowel followed by f)

    - “bell” (one syllable, ends in a single vowel followed by l)

    - “miss” (one syllable, ends in a single vowel followed by s)

- When Not to Apply:

  - Do not apply to words with more than one syllable.

  - Do not apply to words ending in consonants other than f, l, or s.

  - Example:

    - “cat” (ends in t, not doubled to “catt”)
