Simple Past Tense:

 Understanding the Simple Past Tense

🥳 The simple past tense is used to talk about actions or events that happened in the past. 

🥳 These actions are already finished. 

🥳 Think of it as talking about something that has already been done!

 How to Form the Simple Past

1. Regular Verbs: 

For most verbs, you can make the simple past tense by adding -ed to the end of the verb.

   - Example:

     - walk → walked

     - jump → jumped

     - play → played

2. Irregular Verbs: 

Some verbs don’t follow the -ed rule.

 These are called irregular verbs, and they change completely in the past tense.

   - Example:

     - go → went

     - eat → ate

     - see → saw

 When to Use the Simple Past

- To Talk About Something That Happened Once:

  - Yesterday, I watched a movie.

  - Last week, we went to the zoo.

- To Talk About Something That Happened Many Times in the Past:

  - When I was a child, I played soccer every day.

  - We visited our grandparents every summer.

- To Talk About Actions in Stories:

  - Once upon a time, there lived a giant in a big castle.

  - The princess danced all night at the ball.

 Simple Past Keywords:

Certain words often tell us that we should use the simple past tense. 

These words show that the action happened in the past. 

Here are some examples:

- Yesterday: Yesterday, she cleaned her room.

- Last (week, month, year, etc.): Last year, we traveled to New York.

- Ago (a few minutes ago, two hours ago, etc.): Ten minutes ago, I finished my homework.

- In (a specific year or past time): In 2010, they moved to a new house.

 Examples of Simple Past Sentences

1. I baked cookies with my mom yesterday.

   (The word “yesterday” tells us that this happened in the past.)

2. He played soccer with his friends last Saturday.

   (The phrase “last Saturday” shows it happened in the past.)

3. She read a book two days ago.

   (The phrase “two days ago” indicates a past event.)

4. We watched a funny movie last night.

   (The phrase “last night” points to the past.)

5. I walked to school this morning.

   (Even though it’s still today, “this morning” is in the past.)
