Prepositions of Time: At, On, and In

Prepositions of time help us talk about when something happens. The three most common prepositions used for time are at, on, and in. Let’s explore how to use them with simple rules and examples.


1. At

We use at to refer to specific times, holidays, or specific points of time in the day.

Examples:

  • At a specific time:

    • I wake up at 7:00 AM.
    • The train arrives at 5:30 PM.
  • At specific points of the day:

    • She studies at night.
    • We eat lunch at noon.
  • At holidays without ‘day’:

    • We visit friends at Christmas.
    • There are fireworks at Diwali.

2. On

We use on for specific days and dates.

Examples:

  • On specific days:

    • I will meet you on Monday.
    • She has an exam on her birthday.
  • On specific dates:

    • The event is on January 15th.
    • He was born on July 4th, 2000.
  • On special days:

    • We celebrate Independence Day on August 15th.

3. In

We use in for longer periods of time like months, years, centuries, or parts of the day.

Examples:

  • In months:

    • We go on vacation in December.
  • In years:

    • The telephone was invented in 1876.
  • In centuries:

    • This temple was built in the 15th century.
  • In parts of the day:

  • Use on for specific days and dates.
