UK English Grammar Level-2
Subject and Predicate
Learning about subject and predicate is the first step toward understanding how sentences work. Let’s dive in with easy examples!
What is a Sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that makes sense.
For example:
- The cat runs.
- The sun is shining.
A sentence has two parts:
- Subject
- Predicate
1. What is a Subject?
The subject is the part of the sentence that tells who or what the sentence is about.
Easy Examples:
- The dog barks.
(Who is the sentence about? The dog) - My mom is cooking.
(Who is the sentence about? My mom) - The car is red.
(What is the sentence about? The car)
2. What is a Predicate?
The predicate is the part of the sentence that tells us what the subject is doing or what happens to the subject.
Easy Examples:
- The dog barks.
(What does the dog do? Barks) - My mom is cooking.
(What is my mom doing? Is cooking) - The car is red.
(What is the car like? Is red)
How to Identify the Subject and Predicate?
To make it easy for you, follow these steps:
- Find the subject first: Ask, “Who or what is the sentence about?”
- Find the predicate: Ask, “What is the subject doing, or what is being said about it?”
Examples:
Here are simple sentences with the subject and predicate labeled:
- The cat | is sleeping.
(Subject: The cat, Predicate: is sleeping) - Tom | plays with his toy.
(Subject: Tom, Predicate: plays with his toy) - The flowers | are blooming.
(Subject: The flowers, Predicate: are blooming) - My dad | drives a car.
(Subject: My dad, Predicate: drives a car)
Fun Activity :
